Also known as Checkered Lily, Snake's Head Fritillary, and Guinea-Hen Flower.

This very unique flowering plant species is in the family Liliaceae, and it originated from Europe. Often grown with other color varieties in rock or woodland gardens, or in beds as a ground cover. Somewhat dainty in appearance, featuring solitary (less frequently 2-3), drooping, 2” long, bell-shaped flowers which are checkered and veined with reddish-brown, purple, white and gray atop slender stems.

It flowers from March to May and grows between 15–40 cm (6–16 in) in height. It is a bulbous perennial that will slowly produce a button-shaped bulb, about 2 cm in diameter, containing poisonous alkaloids. USDA Climatic Zones 3 to 4 with mulch, 5 to 7 without mulch. It should be planted in an area that retains moisture throughout the year.
