Leucaena Leucocephala, Miracle Lead Tree, Koa Haole Seeds

Leucaena Leucocephala
Also known as the Miracle Tree, Lead Tree, and Koa Haole

During the 1970s and early 1980s, this shrubby bush or tree was known as the 'miracle tree' because of its worldwide success as a long-lived and highly nutritious forage tree, and its great variety of other uses. As well as forage, leucaena can provide firewood, timber, human food, green manure, shade, biomass production, and erosion control. The legume provides an excellent source of high protein cattle fodder. The young pods are edible and can be made with many different ethnic dishes. It is also among about 700 trees now known to fix nitrogen.

It has a very fast growth rate, young trees can reach a height of 20 ft in two to three years, but occasionally grows to 30-60ft. The flower heads are round, white, 3/4 inch (1.9 cm) in diameter puffballs of numerous white stamens with hairy, pale yellow anthers. Only mildly hardy, probably not surviving temperatures lower than 32F.
